He may be currently one of BBC 2’s Grumpy Old en at the moment but Rick Wakeman is positively Grinning at the thought of achieving one of his lifetime ambitions on Saturday December 11th thanks to Quaywest FM in Minehead.
Fresh from touring with “Yes”, Rick is spending the day in West Somerset on December 11th which will include driving a train on the West Somerset Railway, switching on the Christmas lights in Minehead and performing at the towns Regal Theatre in the evening.
After a mornings tuition, Rick will drive the 14.45 from Minehead to Williton and back, followed by switching on the Christmas lights and a unique one man show at the Regal Theatre.
In conversations with Quaywest FM Managing Director David Mortimer some years ago, Rick Wakeman expressed his love of trains and that he had always wanted the opportunity to drive a steam locomotive. In what must be the ultimate barter, the West Somerset Railway came up with the goods and in return, he is switching on the Minehead lights and performing an evening concert at the Regal Theatre entitled “Rick Wakeman – Grumpy Old Man Off the Rails”. The evening is sponsored by Quaywest FM, The Somerset County Gazette, The Exmoor Teddy Bear Company, West Somerset District Council, West Somerset Railway and Andrews on the Weir.
