GWR get into a spin over Manchester licence

GWR Group has selected PR agency Spin Media to generate a raft of publicity throughout Greater Manchester.

The group plans to enter the race for a new Greater Manchester FM radio licence. The radio industry regulatory authority Ofcom is set to announce the call for submissions for the new licence in November.

GWR operates Classic FM and 31 FM stations across the country and has the largest combined audience of any commercial radio group. It is also one of the biggest investors in digital radio, operating classic rock station Planet Rock, modern rock station The Storm and ‘fresh hits’ station, Core.

Matt Deegan, who’s leading the project for the GWR Group said: “We’ve been working on the Manchester project for over a year, testing formats and speaking to the community asking what they want from their new radio station.

“Spin Media have won the account to support us in the bid for the new licence with a wealth of local knowledge and a host of fun, creative and eye-catching ideas.”

GWR currently has no radio interests in the Greater Manchester area.

Bids for the new licence are to be entered by 5pm today. It is expected that the successful bid will be announced by Ofcom in mid 2005.
