Fellowship for John Simons

GMG Radio’s Group Programme Director John Simons has received a Fellowship from The Radio Academy. John received the honour, an award to recognise individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the industry, at the 2006 Patron’s Lunch.

Already a Radio Academy Trustee John Simons, better know to the industry as ‘Simo’ has spent the last 27 years making great radio.

He began his career in radio as a presenter back in the eighties and is now thought of as one of the leading experts in regional programming. His huge contribution to the industry was first recognised in May 2004 when he won the Gold Sony Programmer of the Year award.

John has been instrumental in the success of Real Radio and smooth fm and as Group Programme Director for GMG Radio leads the on-air development of the group’s seven regional Real, Smooth and Century radio stations.

Previously, John launched the Century brand of stations onto the airwaves so was delighted to have them back into his clasp when GMG Radio bought Century FM North East and North West two months ago.

Commenting on his award recognition, John said: “It was a complete surprise to receive this accolade and a great honour. To get an award for doing something that I love and enjoy is fantastic. Here’s to the next 27 years!”
