Newsreader shot, owner killed

A female owner of a radio station in Northern Afghanistan has been fatally shot in front of her eight year old son inside her own house. Zakia Zaki had run Peace Radio in Jabalussaraj since 2001. The news comes less than a week after a TV reporter was shot at home.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately known, but following the shooting it is understood the gunmen jumped over a wall and fled. TV reporter Shokiba Sanga Amaaj, was shot inside her house in Kabul on Friday by two male relatives.

Women have become more active in Afghanistan's radio and television stations since the easing of restrictions after the fall of the Taliban regime but they remain a small minority among journalists.
