Racist complaint for Heart

The Heart breakfast show with Sam and Amy on Chrysalis station Heart 106 has attracted one complaint from a listener who claimed the breakfast duo were being offensive and racist. Sam and Amy asked listeners to call in and perform Irish jokes to win tickets for Riverdance.

Luckily the station apologied for the stunt a week later on-air, and Ofcom was happy with the prompt action taken by the station. They said: "While the banter surrounding this competition item was clearly intended to be good-natured, it nevertheless should have been recognised that such humour had the potential to cause genuine offence. However, in view of the fact that the matter was dealt with internally and an on-air apology given, we regard the matter as resolved."

The on-air apology said: "“Last week on the show, during a competition based around Irish culture, we aired some jokes that were offensive towards Irish people. It was never our intention to offend, and we wish to sincerely apologise for any offence caused”.
