Jack dropped – WCBS comes back

JACK fm in New York is about to be scrapped, and the 101.1 frequency returned to the oldies format which occupied the spot for over 30 years. WCBS-FM was New York’s favourite oldies station before the sudden format switch by CBS in 2005. The switch will happen later this week.

There are almost 50 JACK stations in the United States and Canada, with more in Spain (Jose FM) and similar formats (Dave, Bob, Doug) also operating. The UK is about to get its first taste of the American format later this year as JACK fm Oxfordshire is launched by Absolute Radio.

Absolute Radio’s Programme & Operations Director Clive Dickens is confident the scrapping of the format in New York is not representative of the format as a whole: “JACK fm New York was a previously a very successful heritage Oldies station before becoming JACK fm, whereas Oxfordshire in a new licence / station. JACK continues to be the biggest and most successful new format in recent radio history right across America but NY will welcome back WCBS-FM very soon.”

Popular presenters in New York such as Cousin Brucie, Dan Ingram and Harry Harrison were all let go when the station switched two years ago. Listeners had been complaining ever since, and are more than happy to hear that the oldies are back.

The station is to relaunch as CBS FM at 1,01pm on Thursday 12th July.
