New UK jazz station to launch

Internet radio network Play UK is about to launch five new radio services – including a jazz station. The news comes less than a year after GCap Media launched a national jazz station on DAB with high-profile presenters.

In addition to Play Jazz UK, the other streams to be launched are Play Reggae UK, Play Country UK, Play Love UK and Play Urban UK.

The launch of these further stations, together with the existing services, will all feature as key elements in the launch of Play TV (a media service via a broadband connection) and will have their own separate channels.

Play Radio UK’s Station Manager Marcus Quilter stated: “I am delighted that the expansion of Play Radio UK is happening alongside the launch of Play TV and it will inevitably help to raise our profile even further.”

GMG Radio also operate an online jazz station known as jazzfm.com – which used to broadcast from London and Manchester before being re-branded as Smooth FM.

According to Quilter, even more streams are already planned for Play UK.
