BBC Radio 1 backs down

BBC Radio 1 will play the uncut version of the Pogues' Fairytale of New York, after a day of criticism from listeners for trying to edit out certain words. Kirsty MacColl's mother even branded the networks decision to cut out the words slut and faggot as ridiculous.

Station producers edited out the words from the 20-year-old festive hit suddenly this year, even though other stations including Radio 2 continued to play the original.

Controller Andy Parfitt said the original decision was "wrong".
