Duke visits Basildon station

The Duke of Gloucester has visited Basildon’s Gateway FM, making a 10-minute appearance on the community radio station and chatting to members of the station’s team of volunteers.

While there earlier this week, he also presented three local children with award for making a positive contribution to the community.

Danny Lawrence, business development director at the station, told the Southend Standard that it was great to have a member of the Royal Family at the station. He said: “He met more than 30 of our volunteers and spoke to them about what they all did and the overall schedule of the station and then spent ten minutes on air talking to Yvonne Wiliams in the afternoon show.”

Gateway 97.8 provides a variety of training for people of all ages and since launching a new training academy offers qualifications in Broadcasting to help motivate people and improve their skills. The station recently won the High sheriff award in Essex.
