Prime Minister’s Award for Gateway 97.8

Community radio station Gateway 97.8 has been awarded one of the Big Society Awards.

The award, from Downing Street, recognises the ‘valuable social gain contribution the station has made to the betterment of society’.

Gateway, which started four years ago, is heavily involved in teaching media skills as well as delivering a full-time local radio service for the Basildon Borough and East Thurrock. It provides work experience and special need placements as well as volunteer opportunities.

Managing Director Yvonne Williams told RadioToday.co.uk: “It is a great tribute to the work, enthusiasm and care of our team that we have received this Award after just our first year of full-time broadcasting.”

Business Development Director Danny Lawrence: “This most prestigious Award underscores the value of Gateway 97.8 in providing a personal career development route for people of all ages.”

Ros Connors is the Director charged with Programme Control. She says: “We work hard to develop truly professional standards in our output while providing opportunities for people to develop their skills from scratch.”
