Bauer station Hallam FM has announced a partnership with South Yorkshire Police that will see the broadcast of information about stolen vehicles within minutes of the report being received by officers.
The police force’s control room will pass details through to the studios with presenters reporting the registration numbers and make and colour of cars to encourage listeners to spot them and ring in.
Inspector Craig Clifton of South Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group said: “In the last 12 months 3,006 vehicles have been stolen in South Yorkshire. Approximately 50 per cent of cars that are reported stolen are recovered and returned to the owner. If vehicle theft is promptly reported there is more chance of your car being recovered. By working with Hallam FM, a radio station with the highest listenership coverage in the region, it means we can potentially increase reported sightings and further improve the chances of recovering recently stolen vehicles as well as sending a clear warning to would be car thieves.”
James Lett, Deputy Programme Director told us: “The power of radio never ceases to amaze me, and hopefully Hallam FM listeners will once more come to the rescue. Our ‘Jamliners’ already do South Yorkshire proud by keeping an eye on South Yorkshire roads and reporting travel problems, but if they can also spot a vehicle that’s just been stolen, then this could be an even more positive start to 2012.”
The station and police are reminding listeners that they shouldn’t approach the driver of a suspected stolen car or attempt to intervene in any way, but should report sightings of the vehicle by calling South Yorkshire Police on 101 when it is safe and legal to do so.
