New host for BBC Local’s Asian highlights

Talat-Farooq Awan from BBC Radio Manchester and Radio Lancashire is taking over as host of Desi Download – the show that presents the weekly pick of Asian programmes from across BBC local radio.

The show airs on BBC WM and stations in the West of England – and is also available as a podcast.

Awan steps in for regular presenter Satnam Rana who is on maternity leave.

The show, launched in 2009, brings together the best journalism, current affairs and debate from 14 Asian community programmes broadcast across the local radio network.

The temporary host told Ariel: “It is a great way to get a real flavour of the depth of journalism we have across BBC Local Radio in England.”

Desi Download producer Ruchi Tandon added: “At this time of uncertainty it shows the importance of local content and how it connects with an increasingly diversifying British South Asian population.”

Talat-Farooq Awan presents the weekly Asian magazine show Indus, which is broadcast on BBC Radio Manchester and Radio Lancashire on Sunday evenings.
