Capital FM snubs One Direction after Brits gaffe

Radio Today understands Capital FM has dropped One Direction songs from its playlist after the boyband thanked rival station Radio 1 on stage at last night’s BRIT Awards.

The X Factor group were picking up the Best British Single prize – after being voted winners by Capital FM listeners and iTunes users.

On stage at London’s O2 arena – and in front of millions watching on TV at home – Harry Styles from the boyband said: “And a massive thank you to Radio 1”.

People took to Twitter straight away to point out the gaffe, since the award they won was supported by Radio 1’s commercial rival Capital FM.

Radio 1 breakfast presenter Chris Moyles wrote: “Best British single voted by listeners to Capital FM, One Direction. Harry Styles said “a massive thank you to Radio 1″ HaHa Nice one!”

Moyles’ colleague Scott Mills added: “@edsheeran Is a lad. And thankful for Radio 1 breaking him. As are one direction. During the award voted by capital listeners. Thanks 1d!

Capital FM’s owners Global’s talent division manages fellow boyband The Wanted who were also shortlisted in the Best British Single Category but missed out to One Direction.

Radio Today understands that a planned appearance by the group on Capital FM today was shelved as well as promotion for their upcoming arena tour.

At the time of publication a spokeswoman for Global Radio declined to comment.

Update at 5pm Wednesday 22nd February 2012:

A statement from One Direction has been issued by PR firm Hackford Jones. It reads: “One Direction forgot to thank the Capital Radio listeners last night when picking up their BRIT Award for Best British Single. This was an oversight as the boys were caught up in the excitement of winning. The band would like take this opportunity to thank Capital Radio and all their listeners for their support and for voting for them.”
