DJ Tim Westwood is tweeting that he has been ‘sacked’ from his BBC Radio 1Xtra weekday show after it was announced he is being replaced.

He remains with the station at the weekend, with his regular Saturday night show and a new Sunday show.

He tweeted just before 6pm Thursday “I’ve been sacked from 1Xtra Mon-Fri 4-7pm from sept #westwoodyourfired” and started re-tweeting listeners who did not like the news. He then followed it up with “It’s official I’ve lost my afternoon voice due to schedule changes I will not be presentin 1Xtra Mon-Fri 4-7pm from Sept”

Charlie Sloth will takeover Drive, or as the station calls it, Early Evening. Charlie’s delighted to be taking over from Westwood: “I’m very excited about being given the opportunity to speak to the nation for five days a week and for the faith put in me by the Radio 1Xtra team.”

Tim’s official press release quote is “It’s been a lot of fun and a great experience.”

55 isn’t young for a radio 1 DJ. Can’t take a posh middle class middle aged geezer who talks like he’s from the ghetto seriously. Maybe R1Xtra felt the same…

Now the Beeb are always crying out about lack of funds, but why then do they have all these Music Channels….Radio 1 and 1 Extra could be amalgameted into a really good personality driven new  music based station minus Moyles type up my own ass cause your really intrested in my life type waffle……Two is Gold minus ads, that now has presenters who are able to move up a gear and take some of the middle ground……Dump Classical on 3…listening figs show that it is not relevant 2 today’s market, Classic F M are giving that market what they want, move 6 into there….put 4 and 5 together…as news/ sport….apart from John Humphries in the Morning and PM at 5 …again figures poor…BUT MUST BE KEPT AS NEWS IS IMPORTANT AND IT IS THE ONLY SOURCE NOW OUTSIDE LONDON…..Sport , telly are doing it,so 5 is not really relevent these days , nice idea befote Sky etc.
And is there any reason why overnight ..1/ 1 Extra / 2/….cant come together as one service??…i know as a former Beeb man the saving there would not be great…but look after thr pennies!!!!

I suggested to the BBC last year (when the save our station campaigns were going on) that if any service should be axed, it should be Radio 1 and 1Xtra by amalgamating the two into one.  6am-7pm should be music more based on the current chart whilst at other times, the 1Xtra programmes should be broadcast.

Its a bit daft that both services are aimed at exactly the same audience.  The fact that more 1Xtra programming is going to be also broadcast on Radio 1 only services to reinforce the argument for both services to be merged.  This would also give the DAB signals a chance to be upgraded.

Before anyone askes, the rock programme could always be moved to Radio 2 or 6 Music as could any other specialist music programme that does not conform to the above format.

And as I’ve said before, the BBC can change a station’s format without asking anyone.  How?  Because that’s the way the BBC operates - just like an American radio station.
