5 live’s Aasmah Mir to leave the station

One of BBC Radio 5 live’s longest serving presenters Aasmah Mir is leaving the station to explore other opportunities.

She’s been there over a decade and has presented virtually every news programme on the station, most recently co-presenting Drive with Peter Allen.

In an email to staff this morning, controller Adrian Van-Klaveren said: “I’m sorry to tell you that Aasmah Mir has decided to leave 5 live in early November at the end of her current contract.

“I know you’ll join me in thanking her for all she’s done for the station and wishing her the very best for the future. We’ll announce her successor as the permanent co-presenter of Drive in due course.

Aasmah said: “5 live has been my family and my home for the past 11 years and I will really miss my colleagues. The time is right, though, to start the next chapter in my broadcasting career. I leave behind incredibly fond memories of my time on air here. Most notably, I will miss working with Peter. Who will get his tea now? Our time together has brought record RAJARS and two Sony Golds – if it’s good to leave at the top then I feel like I’m doing that today. I want to thank 5Live for all the good times. There have been many of them. It’s a station staffed by some of the very best in the business and I wish everyone continued success.”

Aasmah announced the news herself on Twitter last night:
