The industry’s online radio console, Radioplayer has launched a free app on the iOS platform for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices.

The BBC and Commercial Radio funded service will also launch on Android phones in the near future. It contains the same features as the website, including a search engine and the ability to add favourites, plus the ability to see local stations using the phone’s GPS.

The mobile app was conceived by Radioplayer partners, designed by TUI Interactive and built by All In Media.

Tim Davie, Director, BBC Audio and Music said: “The success of Radioplayer has proved the appeal of offering the whole of UK radio in one place. The app launch is a logical next step and is excellent news for listeners and the UK radio industry.”

Michael Hill, Managing Director said: “Our aim was to create a simple app that showcases the amazing variety of UK radio. The fact we’ve built one that’s also beautiful, innovative, and a joy to use, is testament to the power of partnerships.”

Andrew Harrison, Chairman of Radioplayer said: “This new app will help smartphone users to discover the depth and breadth of UK radio. Hundreds of stations are now just one mobile click away – another milestone in the industry’s progress towards a multiplatform digital future.”

It’s not an iPad optimised app. It’s an iPhone/iPod touch app, that works on an iPad – but doesn’t look great. Is a real iPad app on the way?

Love the colourful ribbons that appear on the splash page at startup and very clever that it asks to use your current location. I’m sure that will amount to a great deal of interesting data for radio stations that are signed up to the service.

When I try to listen the main screen seems to be covered in Heart logos. Am I doing something wrong?

Free service versus a service you have to pay to be on. Guess which one is more popular?

Radioplayer is actually superior in quality/buffering I’ve noticed. Tested in quite a few places and on 3g/wifi/lte.
