Wessex FM celebrates 20 years on the air

South and West Dorset station Wessex FM has celebrated its 20th birthday by inviting 400 listeners to a station party in Weymouth.

Maria Greenwood, one of the longest serving staff members at the UKRD-owned station said “We wanted to celebrate being here for 20 years, still with our original name and proving local radio from the local area, not many stations can claim that these days”.

The station also treated its listeners to some musical memories from 1993 – the year of launch – during the day.

Managing Director Steve Bulley added “Today is about celebrating our future, our past has been great grounding, but it’s the coming years that will drive our business”.

Wessex fm launched on the 4th of September 1993 with Tony Blackburn and Lionel Blair, as you can see on the photo. It is currently listened to by 52% of the area every month.
