Mike Sweeney joins BBC Radio Manchester

Real Radio XS breakfast show presenter Mike Sweeney is joining BBC Radio Manchester to host the mid-morning show.

He’ll replace Sam Walker, who joined from Real Radio North West breakfast 12 months ago, who’s off to BBC Radio 5 live for six months.

Mike has been with Real Radio XS, having joined when the station launched as Rock Radio in 2008 on drivetime. Prior to that he was with Gold Manchester and is well known in the area from his time at Piccadilly Radio in the 80s and 90s. He’s also part of a local band, the Salford Jets.

Most recently he’s being covering daily Radio Manchester programmes in addition to his Monday-Friday breakfast show, as well as “Sweeney’s Sixties Classics” on a Sunday lunchtime.

Kate Squire, Managing Editor of BBC Radio Manchester says: “Mike is a natural broadcaster with a great heritage in the city, and we are delighted to have him on our airwaves. He joined us in May in the Sunday slot and the audience reaction has been incredibly positive. He is as relaxed interviewing and debating local news as he is introducing music, and I know our listeners are in for a treat.”

Real Radio XS is expected to be sold by new owners Global Radio as part of a ruling by the Competition Commission to sell stations in the Manchester area, with details expected soon.

RadioToday is expecting further details this afternoon about Sam’s new role at 5 live.
