Wessex FM has launched a campaign running up to the World Cup in Brazil, to collect football boots for disadvantaged youngsters in the country.
Wessex FM’s Programme Manager and Breakfast Show presenter James O’Neill says: “We wanted to do something a little different in the run up to the World Cup, and the Boots 2 Brazil campaign will be Dorset’s effort to help the football mad children in Brazil play their favourite sport, while the rest of the world watches the tournament”.
The Boots 2 Brazil initiative will also see World and European Football Skills Champion John Farnworth visiting one local school who help collect boots, and running a football skills Masterclass for the children.
Chris Sharman from Challenger Sports, who are behind the campaign, says the children there often play with no footwear. “They don’t have access to things we would class as normal over here – football boots, kit, training, coaching or access to pitches. So they will kick around what they can, and wear what they can. Most of the younger children will just play barefooted.”
