Lincs FM’s Newsteam has provided extra coverage of the local Newark by-election recently.
The station broadcast coverage from the moment former Tory Patrick Mercer resigned the seat with updates on the campaign trail, leading up to Thursday’s vote – interviewing the Prime Minister three times, with exclusives too from UKIP’s Nigel Farrage, Ed Miliband, Ed Balls and Boris Johnson.
On election night, the station produced extended bulletins overnight, offering listeners the latest as the count was underway – including an interview with the Monster Raving Loony Party candidate, who provided some light relief with his policies to convert Newark Castle into an extra-terrestrial arrival ground for aliens.
Friday’s breakfast bulletins had the result, with interviews from the winner plus from UKIP who came second.
Lincs FM’s Director of Programming Sean Dunderdale said: “While there was plenty of national interest in Newark, we wanted to give a local view on what was happening in the town, reflecting the local issues that voters were concerned about and examining just how such a frenzied campaign had affected life for those in Newark.
“It also gave the Newsteam the chance to rehearse coverage for next year’s general election, which – for Lincolnshire and Newark – promises to be an exciting event for those with an interest in politics.”
