BBC Radio 4 reports Cliff Richard arrested

The BBC has wrongly announced Cliff Richard has been arrested during the headlines in BBC Radio 4’s PM programme today.

Announcing what was coming up in the programme, presenter Eddie Mair said at 5pm “..also tonight, the arrest of Cliff Richard..the BBC is helping MPs with their enquiries as I speak we’ll have a full report before 6..”

30 minutes later Eddie Mair mentioned: “On Cliff Richard… by the way just to correct something I said at the beginning of the programme, he has not been arrested – that’s our mistake.”

A BBC Spokesperson told RadioToday: “The reference to an arrest was an error which was corrected on air shortly afterwards.”

The story surrounding the error was about the how a police chief has apologised for the BBC deal on coverage of the raid on Sir Cliff Richard’s home.
