Stephanie Hirst made her first public appearance as a woman on the final day of the three-day Radio Festival in Salford.
She took to the stage as a confident, happy and stylish woman to probably the biggest reception ever seen at a Festival. The audience of radio industry professionals applauded her for over half a minute – which could easily have continued for much longer if time allowed. Host Phil Williams joked it could have gone on but they only had a 20 minute slot.
Until Saturday, Hirsty lived a public life as Simon, presenter of Capital FM Yorkshire breakfast and self-titled radio anorak. “I’m still me” she claimed on stage many a time as delegates watched with interest and admiration.
Stephanie explained about growing up, wearing her mum’s clothes, receiving support from friends and how overwhelmed she is by the love and positive reaction she’s received from the radio industry. Over 25,000 people have liked the “We Want Stephanie Hirst Back On Capital FM” Facebook page in just a few days.
Global Radio has avoided making any comment since Stephanie started living life as a woman, after the BBC conducted an hour-long exclusive interview with her at the weekend.
