Radio 4 celebrates Gone with the Wind anniversary

Independent radio production company Made in Manchester has made two special programmes to mark the 75th anniversary of the Hollywood movie Gone with the Wind, for the BBC.

Gone With the Wind: A Legacy features previously un-broadcast interviews with cast and crew carried out by the veteran Hollywood reporter Barbra Paskin back in the early 1980s.

The hour long programme is presented by academic and writer Diane Roberts and airs on BBC Radio 4 this Saturday evening from 8pm.

Producer Ashley Byrne says: ‘Gone With the Wind which is a love story set in the American Civil War remains one of the most successful Hollywood films of all time but it’s not without controversy. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Margaret Mitchell its depiction of the relationship between whites and black in the American south has long been a subject of debate and it’s an area we look at during this programme’.

Ashley adds: “Scarlett O’Hara’s character is also examined in the documentary. She’s often seen as one of the first strong female film roles. We ask what, if anything, her character did for the progress of feminism?.’

Gone With the Wind: A Legacy is just the latest in a long line of documentaries MIM has made for Radio 4’s Archive on 4 slot. Past programmes have included The Lost World of the Suffragettes with Dan Snow, One Way Ticket: The Beeching Cuts Revisited with Michael Portillo and 40 Years in Europe: How Was it For You? With John Sergeant.

Meanwhile Made in Manchester has also produced an edition of the World Service long running history programme Witness in which Barbra Paskin digs into her archive for specific memories of the film’s premiere which took place in Atlanta on the 15th December 1939.
