Metro to repeat controversial competition

Punching Above Your Weight is back on Metro and TFM for the third year in succession.

The competition seeks to find the most mismatched couple in terms of their looks, and previously attracted global media interest in 2014 when Newcastle man, Darren Donaghey, aged 29, was crowned king of the beasts.

Following the win and the resulting publicity, which included an appearance on This Morning and Million Pound Drop, he wed his partner of eight years in August 2014 and used the competition prize, a two week holiday in Greece, as their honeymoon.

Breakfast presenters, Steve and Karen, who will be running the competition in their weekday show commented: “I’ve never known a competition get people talking like this one; we have more fun every time we do it! The publicity surrounding last year’s winner was staggering. We never imagined we would be getting calls from Australian and American radio stations who wanted to cover the story.”

Karen added: “I went on holiday after the competition last year and it was incredible to see it making news across the world.”

On hearing the promotion is about to take to the airwaves again, Sales Advisor Darren, and his hairdresser wife, Kate aged 25, were full of laughter as Darren explained: “We’re both looking forward to seeing this year’s entrants. I said it last year, it was a bit of fun and we both enjoyed the whole of experience of featuring on live radio and of course sitting on the This Morning TV sofa.

“We never imagined it would attract as much interest; we featured in papers and TV stations across the globe. We had calls from Australia, India, America and even Mexico.”

The contest returns from today (February 16th) for 2 weeks.
