Apple poaching producers from BBC Radio 1?

An article in MBW suggests up to four producers are about to leave Radio 1 to work for Apple on a new streaming music product.

The report, which RadioToday understands to be correct, says Zane Lowe’s former producer James Bursey is joining him in LA at Apple. Plus, three others are rumoured to be exiting Radio 1 to work for Apple but based in London.

Read the full report here and await further information as we get it from the BBC.

UPDATE: A statement from the BBC reads: ““Radio 1 is respected worldwide for making great programmes and is vital to the record industry for choosing the best new music and artists. We are proud to have a proven record of discovering and developing staff that are seen as the best in the business.”

In addition, it’s been confirmed that Kieran Yates from BBC Introducing is leaving the BBC to join Apple.

Last week, BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra’s Head of Programmes Rhys Hughes said he’s afraid of whatever Apple has planned in the music and radio sector. Speaking with Radio 1 presenter Clara Amfo at the Student Radio Conference, Rhys says “Apple has the money to chuck at it and they’ll tie you in”. He mentioned Zane Lowe joining the company ahead of their music streaming plans being announced (probably) in June/July this year.

So with Apple stealing Radio 1’s presenters & producers, and Chris Moyles rumoured to be joining XFM, it can’t be a good time for the station.

Interestingly, James Bursey has deleted all the tweets he’s ever made on Twitter and yesterday he was tagged leaving for the airport. (Tweet now deleted)
