This year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards was hosted by Mark Radcliffe and Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis live from the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff in front of an audience of 1,600.

The 16th annual ceremony featured live performances and a host of celebrities and musicians handing out the awards. They included Gavin & Stacey star Ruth Jones, who presented Nancy Kerr with the Folk Singer Of The Year, and singer-songwriter Billy Bragg, presenting Peggy Seeger/Calum MacColl with Best Original Song.

Opening the show in were The Rails with their performance of Jealous Sailor. The band also received the Horizon Award from Casualty actor Charles Dale. Best Duo winners Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker were presented with their award by Welsh guitarist and songwriter Andy Fairweather Low, with the duo later performing The Banks of the Sweet Primroses. The award for Best Traditional Track went to The Gloaming, with the Best Group award going to The Young’uns, while Sam Sweeney walked away with Musician of the Year.

A Lifetime Achievement Award went to folk music legend Yusuf / Cat Stevens, presented to him by David Gray. This was followed by a performance by Yusuf / Cat Stevens of his new song, Cat & The Dog Trap, and Moonshadow.
