This year’s winner of the SRA Selector Competition is heading to Mexico to spend a week working at a radio station.
Ross Buchanan from Smoke Radio at University of Westminster will help at Ibero 90.9 FM, in a promotion run by the British Council.
Six radio stations took part in the competition, who all produced and presented their own weekly version of the Selector show.
Last year’s winner, Jack Saunders, now presents his own show on Kerrang! Radio meaning the initiative has become a great opportunity for UK students to break into the radio industry.
Originally launched in 2001, The Selector is a weekly radio show, and an international showcase for new music covering all styles of music, from indie, dubstep, folk, grime, electro and everything in between. The show features interviews, mixes and live sessions.
Phil Catchpole, Selector Programme Manager for The British Council, said; “Building on the success of last year’s SRA Selector was the main aim and this year’s students have all been brilliant. You can really hear the training they have received coming through in their shows and picking a winner was a tough task. I love the SRA Selector as it is providing opportunities for great, young and talented people in the UK whilst connecting them with our international radio family.”
Ross Buchanan, winner of the 2015 SRA Selector, said; “Just being selected to take part in the SRA Selector was a huge opportunity, but actually winning it has been surreal. Huge thanks to the British Council, Folded Wing and my student station, Smoke Radio at the University of Westminster. Mexico is going to be a life changing experience and I can’t wait to go!”
