Former Radio 1 presenter Mike Read has joined BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey to cover the afternoon show at the end of this month.
He’ll host six programmes for the station, including a special as part of an all-80s Bank Holiday Monday.
Mike was at Radio 1 from 1978 to 1991 and hosted breakfast for five years in the early 1980s. His CV also includes Magic, Capital Gold and Classic FM.
He left his regular weekday slot on BBC Radio Berkshire earlier this year but is still doing specials for the station and also remains part of the weekend line-up on Bauer’s Greatest Hits Network (Big City 2 / formerly Magic AM services). His TV credits include Saturday Superstore and Mike Read’s Pop Quiz.
Mike said: “I’m really looking forward to presenting some shows for BBC Sussex & BBC Surrey, as I grew up in Surrey and lived for many years in both Surrey and Sussex. I’m a great lover of the South Downs and the coast, and my book “The South Coast Beat Scene of the 1960s” added to my musical knowledge of the area. As Chairman of the British Plaque Trust I’m also looking forward to featuring a plaque each day commemorating an eminent character from the region.”
Assistant Editor Mark Carter added: “I’m delighted to welcome Mike to the team. I know that his knowledge of the local area and his love of music will be a winning combination.”
Mike will be covering the Afternoon Show from 12-4 on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st May then from Tuesday 26th to Thursday 28th May. He’ll also be on 2-6pm on Bank Holiday Monday 25th May, doing a programme that will feature contributions and guests from his days on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show, as well as Saturday Superstore.
