Key 103’s breakfast duo Mike Toolan and Chelsea Norris are reliving some of their memorable moments on air today as they mark a decade since teaming up for the show.
Chelsea moved to Key 103 to join Mike in 2005 after 4 years across Manchester at Century, where she’d been a newsreader for both Tony Horne and Darren Proctor.
Toolan told the Manchester Evening News: “It’s an incredible milestone. When I first came to the show I was given a year’s contract, as was Chelsea, and you live or die by your figures. In a way it’s a huge compliment because if people like you they listen and you get to stay.”
The pair have picked out some of the most memorable moments from their 10 years on breakfast for the paper, which reports that they’ve also both gone through divorces during their time on the show, with Chelsea announcing her split from fellow presenter Matt Spokes live on air.
“That was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences,” she told the M.E.N. “A marriage ending, no matter why, is sad. It’s basically saying: ‘I didn’t make it, I failed.’ But if you’re going through it, you can pretty much guarantee a large chunk of the listeners can identify with it.”
Mike added: “That’s the key to a successful radio show, where listeners can make a connection with you. We do kind of bare our souls.”
