Bauer Media acquires Finland’s Radio Nova

Bauer Media is buying Finnish commercial radio business Radio Nova from broadcaster MTV, part of the Bonnier Group.

In addition to Radio Nova, Bauer Media will assume responsibility for the sales and marketing operations of commercial stations NRJ and Nostalgia from MTV.

The acquisition comes after recent expansion in Europe, with the purchase of SBS Discovery Radio from Discovery Communications in July. Bauer now owns stations in Poland, Germany, Slovakia, Scandinavia, Sweden and Denmark, with a strong presence in Norway and Finland.

“Bauer Media is the leading operator in commercial radio business in Europe and adding Nova to our portfolio will further strengthen our position in the Nordic countries”, says Leena Puntila, Managing Director at Bauer Media in Finland.

MTV’s news will continue to be broadcast on Nova, as Bauer Media will purchase news programmes from MTV’s news production company Mediahub. MTV’s news will also be broadcast on other Bauer Media radio stations and the two companies aim to collaborate in sales, marketing and content.

Jani Koskinen, who will act as MTV’s CEO until the end of this year commented: “We’re selling the radio operations and, instead of owning the business, we will tighten our collaboration with Bauer Media. This will ensure that our customers can also have access to comprehensive multimedia solutions in the future. We will concentrate our activities on developing our digital business, such as the Katsomo service”.

“Bauer Media is the leading pan-Nordic broadcaster, reaching more than 10m people each week. Nova complements our portfolio in Finland, extends our reach and offers great potential for future growth”, says Bauer Media UK CEO Paul Keenan. “Radio Nova is a national radio station and one of Finland’s most listened to commercial radio channels. Radio Nova has a rich history of providing fresh viewpoints to current affairs, phenomena and popular topics and the greatest mix of classics and the most stylish new music. We are also excited to be extending our partnership with NRJ”.
