Radiocentre has welcomed new legislative changes which will allow analogue licence rollovers for a further 5 years for stations that are also on DAB.
The Legislative Reform (Further Renewal of Radio Licences) Order 2015 reached its final parliamentary stages on 9th December after being approved in both the Commons and the Lords. It came into force from 15th December, which is well in advance of the date for licences that are due to expire.
The new changes make amendments to the provision on radio licencing which were originally laid out in the Broadcasting Act 1990. Ofcom will outline the precise arrangements and planned timetable for renewals in the New Year.
Radiocentre Chief Executive, Siobhan Kenny said: “I am pleased that the government has recognised the importance of business continuity and investment in the radio industry by making new provisions for these licence extensions. While we felt that there was a case for longer renewals this legislative change is still very welcome, as it will help provide stability for radio stations and their listeners over the next few years”.
