HRH The Earl of Wessex has had a tour of Isle of Wight Radio as part of the station’s 25th birthday celebrations.
The Earl of Wessex was given a tour of the station’s studio and offices, and was shown the radio station’s newly launched website. He also met with John Hannam who has presented his weekly chat show on Isle of Wight Radio since the station began in April 1990.
His Royal Highness was interested to hear how during the presenter’s long-running stint, John has only ever missed two shows throughout his lengthy broadcasting career.
Unusually, the Earl of Wessex agreed to a pre-recorded interview with Programme Director and Breakfast presenter Paul Topping and his co-presenter Emily Wells. During the interview, they discussed the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and his regular visits to the Isle of Wight.
Claire Willis, Managing Director at Isle of Wight Radio, said: “It was an absolute honour to welcome His Royal Highness to Isle of Wight Radio. He was very interested in our role in keeping our listeners updated on important issues and clearly understands the importance of local radio’s role in a community like the Isle of Wight. We are incredibly grateful that he took the time in his very busy schedule to tour the station.”
Paul Topping, Programming Director, said: “Prince Edward was a fantastic guest and really surprised us by accommodating us with an interview, he really engaged with our unique style of radio entertainment! He spent time chatting with the staff and certainly seemed to enjoy the visit.”
