BBC Learning & Radio 1 Academy heads for Hull

BBC Radio 1 and BBC Learning have announced plans for BBC Radio 1’s Academy in the run up to BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend Hull 2017.

Radio 1’s Live Lounge and other live performances will transmit from the Academy, whilst Radio 1 presenters will deliver personal insights into their careers. Attendees will be given the chance to quiz both presenters and Radio 1 bosses about what goes on behind the scenes at the station. Plus the Radio 1 production teams will be giving hands-on guides to making radio.

The Academy aims to inspire local 16-19 year-olds to take the next step in creative careers. It will include a series of special events, local engagement and face-to-face activity and will kick off its residency in Hull on 10-11 February when Matt Edmondson and Alice Levine will broadcast live from the city, offering local young people a chance to get involved.

Alice Levine, Radio 1 DJ, says: “There’s going to be loads for young people to get involved in over the coming weeks and months in Hull in the build up to Big Weekend and we can’t wait to kick off BBC Radio 1’s Academy in the city.”

Louise Kattenhorn, Radio 1 Editor, says: “Radio 1’s Academy always brings such brilliant and motivating events. We are relishing the chance to meet the talented young people of Hull and we’re inspired by the passion and enthusiasm for creativity we’ve already seen from them.”

Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2017 will be taking place at Burton Constable Hall on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 May, with Kings of Leon, Little Mix and Stormzy already announced to perform.
