Radio executive John Myers treated for cancer

Former GMG Radio CEO John Myers has been diagnosed with cancer after the discovery of a tumour on his tonsil and tongue.

In a short social media post, John explains that it is curable after being spotted early and “thankfully, never smoking”.

He says: “Treatment has already begun with doctors anticipating a return to full health by the end of the summer”.

John invented the Century Radio, Smooth Radio and Real Radio brands, whilst working with Border Radio Holdings and more recently GMG Radio. He was also Chief Executive of the Radio Academy in 2011/2012. John is a former Chairman of the UK Radio Academy Awards, The Commercial Radio Awards and now owner of Myers Media.

He’s produced a number of reports for the Government on the future of local radio.

He started his career in Carlisle at BBC Radio Cumbria before joining at Border Television as an on-screen announcer. He later went on to Red Rose Radio and Radio Tees, before entering management, launching CFM and Border’s radio division.

The team at RadioToday wishes him well and a speedy return to full health.
