KBIG failed to identify at the top of hour

Los Angeles radio station KBIG, operating as 104.3 MYfm has been served a Notice of Violation for missing a station ID.

Tom Taylor reports in his daily radio newsletter that the Federal Communications Commission investigated the station after a complaint was received.

It’s a legal requirement in the US for every radio station to announce its call letters and area of broadcast on the hour, every hour.

The FCC says: “On January 23, in response to a complaint, an agent from the Los Angeles office monitored KBIG (104.3)” and found the broadcast “failed to identify the station properly.”

The rule is: “Official station identification shall consist of the station’s call letters followed by the community of license or communities specified in its license as the station’s location.”

In the case of highly-rated hot AC KBIG, it has 20 days to explain what happened, when the FCC agent merely heard “104.3” at the top of the hour.

In the UK, no such Top of Hour rule exists, but the ITU do require stations to identify themselves at least once an hour.
