Pride Radio returns to Newcastle for LGBT

Newcastle and Gateshead’s Lesbian and Bi station, Pride Radio, returns for a another temporary broadcast in the run up to Northern Pride.

The station will be back on 87.9FM for a second time from 20th June until 17th July 2011, culminating at the annual Festival in Newcastle.

Breakfast will be hosted by former Real Radio and Sun FM presenter Lee Finan, along with Dottie Ellis. Carrie and Mary, who are thought to be the only lesbian couple to regularly present a radio show together in the UK – will look after drivetime.

The station has offices and a studio in the heart of the Newcastle gay scene. All equipment and office space have been donated, and the team have managed to fundraise for further investment in technology and running costs.

“We had an amazing response last year and are delighted that we are able to bring the station back to FM. Although we have many listeners to our online service, there are many more people who like to listen in their cars and on the move so being on FM is a real bonus,” said Tony Swinhoe, Pride Radio’s programme controller.

“This year we will have a greater focus on what it means to be gay, lesbian or bi in the north east in 2011. We’ll play a greater variety of music and will be live from the parade and Northern Pride event in Leazes Park in mid July. We’d like to thank our advertisers and supporters that have made this broadcast possible.”

The station also has smartphone apps for listening online or outside of the area.
