Radio Today at NAB Europe

Hola from Barcelona. Whilst readers of our weekly radio newsletter Seven Days in Radio had an exclusive preview blog from Barcelona yesterday, here we bring you the antics of our regular reporter Matthew Hardman, who is enjoying all the fun of the fair, so to speak..

NAB:Spy – Day Zero

While the Sunday evening cocktail party used to be the traditional start of NAB Europe, more and more Sunday sessions keep appearing, with podcasting being the big talking point on day zero this year. I would tell you what they said… but instead I went to see the sights of Barcelona, which is a gorgeous vehicle.

So: the cocktail party. Paid for by HD Radio (the USA version of DAB), the champagne was flowing, as was the conversation. People-spotting is always fun, and in the crowd I saw legendary Atlantic 252 presenter Sandy Beech, and the morning show presenter from legendary New York station 1010 WINS…although his badge said “101 WINS”… which gave him a promotion from AM to FM!

Talking points included the European Radio Awards, and whether non-badged people would get to crash the event, and rumours of next year’s location kept abounding… lean one way and the talk was Amsterdam, lean the other way and the word on the patio was London. We should find out on Day 1.

Talking of Day 1, with a wide range of sessions and a crowded exhibition hall, it should be a good one. Radio Today will bring news through the day, and another NAB:Spy at the end of the day.
