Hospital station Radio Tyneside is marking its 60th birthday tomorrow with the return to the North East airwaves of Morgan in the Morning – AKA radio executive John Myers.
Now broadcasting to hospitals across Newcastle and Gateshead, the service launched originally as a football commentary service back in 1951.
It became one of the first hospital stations to get a AM broadcast licence in 1997 and then earlier this year was the first hospital broadcaster to join the industry-wide Radioplayer.
Tomorrow there will be a special day of programmes to mark the diamond anniversary, kicking off with former Century Radio breakfast DJ John Morgan, better known now to the industry as Radio Academy Chief Executive and consultant John Myers. John is Radio Tyneside’s Chairman.
Among the famous alumni for the station over the years are Mark Forrest, Nicksy, Radio Manchester’s Heather Stott, and BBC television presenter Kate Silverton. The station is currently half-way towards a £60,000 fundraising target for 2011 through the Diamond Appeal.
