Lancashire-based The Bee has been given the all-clear to drop a weekly programme for the Asian community, in a recent change of format request.
The request has been approved with Ofcom saying only three out of five responses opposed the change, and that despite considerable efforts to build a strong audience base over the last nine years for the show, little had materialised.
The Blackburn licence area is already covered by a dedicated Asian radio station with Asian Sound Radio.
The Bee’s Managing Director Simon Brierley said the programme was a “complete departure from our “standard” programming,”
He said: “It is our belief that removing this area of our programming, for which there is little demand, will give a greater consistency to the station’s character of service.”
Ofcom is currently inviting applications for community radio stations in the area covered by The Bee, and the area has historically had a high level of RSL activity for the Asian community.
