Absolute 80s & 5 live get Freesat Awards

Absolute 80s has won the Best Digital Radio Channel Award at the 2014 Freesat Awards, whilst 5 live has won Best News Channel.

Absolute 80s, now owned by Bauer Media, was up against 5 live sports extra, BBC Radio 1Xtra, 6 Music and BBC World Service. Absolute 80s last won the award in 2010 whilst Absolute Radio won it in 2011 and 2013. 1Xtra took it home in 2012.

5 live was nominated for Best News Channel against Al Jazeera, BBC News, CNN and Sky News. Controller Jonathan Wall tweeted: “Delighted that 5 live has won best news channel at the freesat awards for 3rd year running. Well done all at @bbc5live.”

Earlier in the evening Absolute presenter Vicki Blight tweeted: “We are sat at the back of the room, this doesn’t bode well for an @Absolute80s win tonight #freesatawards”

Controller of English services for BBC World Service Richard Porter tweeted: “Sadly @bbcworldservice didn’t win radio category. But thanks @freesat_tv for recognising strength of UK radio #freesatawards”
