Signal 107 retains Wolverhampton licence

Ofcom has awarded the re-advertised local FM commercial radio licence for Wolverhampton to the current licence holder Talksport Limited, broadcasting as Signal 107.

The radio regulator re-advertised the licence in December 2014 and received two applications, from Talksport Limited (Signal 107) and Fusion Radio Limited (Asian Fx).

Asian Fx was proposing a lively, contemporary asian/urban music-led service targeting wolverhampton’s asian population aged 15-54. Signal 107 will continue with its current format.

Scott Taunton, UTV Media COO told RadioToday this morning: “We are delighted with Ofcom’s decision which clearly recognises UTV’s commitment to both Signal 107 and local radio as a whole. The licence renewal secures the future of Wolverhampton’s local radio station until 2027 and is testament to the valuable service provided for local listeners, charitable organisations and small businesses by the talented team at Signal 107.

“Following on the heels of the station’s recent growth in listenership, and ahead of our upcoming application to retain Signal 107’s licence for Telford, this good news gives us confidence in the future of the station.”

The 12-year licence is for a service designed to cover the Wolverhampton area using a single FM frequency.
