Radio Academy launches 2 day expo in Leeds

The Radio Academy is launching a brand-new national radio and audio event, Segue to be held in Leeds over two days on October 18th and 19th.

The event will bring together big industry names and a host of major radio and audio brands. It’ll culminate in the grand finale of the ARIAS on the evening of the 19th at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

A series of speeches, masterclasses and networking opportunities will offer industry professionals the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge, as well as bringing the industry together with the wider business community and helping to inspire the next generation of audio talent.

Segue will open on Wednesday October 18th at the Leeds College of Music with an afternoon session, The Business of Radio, hosted by former BBC Director of Radio, Helen Boaden. She’ll be joined for a panel discussion on the opportunities and threats faced by the sector by Siobhan Kenny, CEO of commercial radio trade body, Radiocentre, Phil Riley, former CEO Chrysalis Radio/Orion Media and Chair of Judges for the ARIAS and Neelay Patel who leads on the future development and innovation of TV, radio and music at the BBC.

The Segue ‘Radio and Audio Fair’ will be held on Thursday 19th at the Malmaison Hotel in Leeds, and will offer a range of masterclasses and workshops, as well as a trade fair for audio, radio and broadcast companies. Tickets for the Segue ‘Radio & Audio Fair’ will be free to Radio Academy members and available to purchase from the Radio Academy website for £10 a day to non-members.

Workshops and masterclass include a session with BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network’s Yasser talking about presenting the Chart Show and breaking into the business; a session on how to produce award winning and captivating documentaries from The Radio Independents Group; and a session led by Emma Bradshaw, Digital Communications Manager at The Royal Household and previously with BBC and Orion Media on How to (maybe) break the Internet.

The two-day event, supported by Leeds BID (Business Improvement District), is expected to appeal to the Leeds business community, regional radio advertisers and employees as well students of the creative industries and industry practitioners from across the UK in Leeds to attend the Radio Academy’s ARIAS.

Roger Cutsforth, Chief Executive of the Radio Academy said: “This brand-new industry event offers both practitioners and those considering a career in the audio industry the opportunity to attend masterclasses, training and networking opportunities with some of the biggest and brightest names in the industry.

Andrew Cooper, Chief Executive of LeedsBID said: “Building on the success of launching the ARIAS in Leeds last year, we are delighted to be working with The Radio Academy once again on bringing a bigger and better industry event to the city.

Director of Operations at Leeds College of Music, David Warren says; “We’re absolutely delighted to partner with Radio Academy and Leeds BID on Segue, which will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of our events schedule for the Autumn season. We’re particularly thrilled to host an event which will provide an excellent insight for those wanting to learn more about the radio and audio sector.”
