Nation presenter marks toll changes with chocolate

Nation Radio breakfast presenter Carl Hughes has given gifts to staff on the Severn Bridge Tolls as a thank you for their service.

He drove along the second Severn crossing on the M4 for the final time over the weekend and handed over flowers and chocolates to the workers, who will be out of work as a result of the tolls being scrapped.

Carl says: “It’s not good news for everybody though as up to 100 members of toll staff will be losing their jobs as a result so I decided to spread some love and thank them with gifts on behalf of Wales. I’ve been using the tolls for over a decade, and whilst not having to pay just to go home is brilliant, you can’t help but feel sorry for all those people losing their jobs so close to Christmas.

“Every time I enter Wales, I’ve always been greeted by an amazing smile and that warm welcome only the Welsh can give, they’ve given remarkable service. A few chocolates and a bunch of flowers was the least I could do really.”

Listeners to the Nation Radio breakfast show were sharing their memories of the bridges all morning including those that remember the toll being just 7 shillings (about 35p) back in 1966.
