Award for Mansfield 103.2’s Managing Director Tony Delahunty

Mansfield 103.2’s Managing Director Tony Delahunty has been recognised for his work in local radio this month by local businesses.

He picked up a lifetime achievement award at an awards ceremony hosted by the Mansfield & Ashfield 2020 business club.

For the last 20 years Tony has been at the helm of Mansfield 103.2 and is the only member of staff who’s been at the station continuously since its launch back in February 1999.

Tony, who originally hails from Southport on Merseyside, has worked in radio since the 80s, following time as a naval officer and head of litigation at a firm of solicitors. He started out in radio as a freelancer at a number of commercial and BBC stations, before taking up his first full-time position as Head of Sport at Pennine Radio, now Pulse in Bradford.

Whilst there, his voice became forever linked with the Bradford City fire disaster at Valley Parade, where he was one of the commentators in the stand that burnt down in May 1985 claiming the lives of 56 people.

He went on to work at Radio Trent, covering Forest during the latter Brian Clough years, and also spent time at LBC and the TV Channel Eurosport.

During this period, Tony set up his own broadcasting business, Tony Delahunty Associates which covered sporting events from golf to motorsport across the globe providing coverage for TV and radio stations worldwide.

In 1998 he moved to Mansfield to embark on the longest chapter of his career and continues to be the Managing Director of Mansfield 103.2 at the age of 75, which he claims is the new 45.

On receiving the award Tony said: “I’m really proud to have been given this, it’s an honour and I’m delighted, particularly as it comes from the community that Mansfield 103.2 serves and broadcasts to.

“As I’ve got older I’ve been at the back watching others at the front here at the radio station doing excellent work and our success is down to all those in the team both past and present. This award is a tribute to those people in our 20th anniversary year.

“The industry has changed dramatically over the last two decades so I’m massively proud that Mansfield 103.2 continues to be one of the most successful small commercial radio stations in the country and we will continue to provide the best service we can for listeners across Mansfield, Ashfield and Bolsover”.
