Podcast: Lack of love for radio’s D Love

DigitalRadioUK chief Ford Ennals, UKRD boss William Rogers and James Cridland joined Trevor Dann for the latest RadioToday podcast.

All three welcomed the announcement by Ed Vaizey to only initiate a switchover date once listeners are ready.

“An enforced premature DAB switchover was not in the interests of our sector of the industry, nor the listener,” Said William.

“For the first time in years we now have a common sense approach to this where the listeners will be driving the change and it allows us all to start planning sensibly without a gun to our heads.”

Discussions also touched on the future of RDS after FM, a relaxation of formats, new transmitters and a website ran by UKRD which pointed out the benefits of sticking with FM.

It was also revealed there’s a lack of love for Digital Radio’s character D Love, after Simon Mayo expressed a hatred for it on stage at the Go Digital conference. James Cridland backed him up saying D Love is a failed attempt a virility whilst others asked why a made up character from the 70s is promoting the future of radio.

Ford Ennals thinks DAB+ is around the corner and William Rogers even admits he has a DAB radio set!
