April Fool Jokes on radio

Local radio stations across the UK took the opportunity to fool listeners into an April Fool joke or two yesterday. One of them was TLRC station Wessex FM which told listeners an Olympic mini-dome was to be built on Weymouth beach as part of the redevelopment plan for the area.

The station's website was inundated with hits looking at the detailed plans as locals were outraged at the waste of money. All was finally revealed in the 12noon news report.

Programme Controller Steve Bulley told us: "Following the true wheel story earlier in the week this was an opportunity to good to miss, I was surprised how many people fell for it."

In other news, a message on the front page of toryradio.com informed visitors that the station was closing down, and re-launching as LabourRadio.com as Founder and Editor Jonathan Sheppard announced he was swapping party. A message on LabourRadio.com said: "And if you believed that, you probably also believed Tony Blair in 97, when they told us things could only get better."

Even the BBC got in on the act with Gardeners Question Time asking questions about the "proposed legislation regarding motor lawn-mowers requiring MOT ‘s".

Telford FM ran a story claiming that Breakfast host Paul Shuttleworth had been nominated for an MBE for services to broadcasting. Meanwhile, The Severn told its listeners that, due to boundary re-alignments, Shrewsbury was to be subsumed into Wales!!
