BBC Children in Need 2006

BBC Children in Need 2006 has taken place with BBC Radio 2 and BBC local radio stations around the country holding special programmes to raise money for the annual fund raising extravaganza.

Whilst the biggest broadcast of the day is on the television, we take a look at what has been happening on the wireless.

BBC Radio 2's Wake up to Wogan Auction raised over £500,000. Up for grabs were a trip to the premiere of The Sound of Music in London, a day with the Daleks on the set of the next series of Doctor Who, the opportunity to rub shoulders with top footballers at the PFA Player or the Year Awards dinner, and the chance to accompany Terry Wogan to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007.

The station's Music Marathon pushed the total raised by the station to over £2.1m … and that's before the TV marathon even began at 7pm. Sarah Kennedy kicked off the marathon at 6 am, giving listeners the chance to request their favourite tracks. The line-up continued through the day with Wake up to Wogan, Ken Bruce, Jeremy Vine, Steve Wright and Chris Evans' concluding at 7pm.

Meanwhile BBC local radio stations across the nation have been taking part in Children in Need. Celebrity chefs Alan Coxon and Alan Hawkins treated shoppers in central London to a Ready Steady Cook-style contest. In Birmingham, Phil Upton and his colleague Andy from the BBC WM breakfast team were dropped off in the middle of Cannock dressed as Andy Pandy and Louby Lou.

BBC Radio Cumbria held OBs from all four corners of the county and BBC Radio Lancashire breakfast presenter Tony Livesey took part in a Strictly Come Dancing competition up against BBC Radio Manchester presenter Dianne Oxberry which was shown on BBC North West Tonight.

The BBC's first appeal for children took place in 1927, in the form of a five-minute radio broadcast on Christmas Day. It raised about £1,143, which equates to about £27,150 today. The Christmas Day Appeals continued on TV and radio right up until 1979. In 1980 came the launch of the now-famous telethon.
