Evans above – Chris adds more

Official listening figures out today show 9.53 million people are tuning in to The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2.

His performance helped lift Radio 2 to a new high of 14.57 million weekly listeners, and smashed Sir Terry Wogan's last figure of 8.1 million.

Since taking over the show in January, Chris attracted the biggest audience recorded for any radio show under current RAJAR methodology.

He joked on stage whilst hosting the Sony Radio Academy Awards on Monday evening about what he would rather have – a great first RAJAR result or an award at the Sonys. And considering he wasn't nominated, he'll hope RAJAR is good to him.

Evans got his wish and more – and it puts an end to the industry wide question about whether he should have taken over from Wogan or not.

Tim Davie, Director BBC Audio and Music, said: “I’m delighted to see Radio 2’s listeners have taken to Chris in such a positive way. He is one of the best broadcasters of his generation and has earned his popularity. This quarter's figures are also great news for the industry as all radio listening has grown, and for BBC Radio, where our efforts to produce ambitious, high quality programming have resulted in healthy listening figures.”
