The voice of afternoon news on BBC Radio Cymru for over 34 years, Gareth Glyn, has announced he is leaving in January.
He has presented the station’s afternoon news programme Post Prynhawn since 1978 but will now concentrate on his career as a composer and musical arranger.
“In the next few years, I’m hoping to complete a Welsh opera,” says Gareth Glyn, who was responsible for the arrangement of Elgar’s Nimrod for the Olympics’ opening ceremony earlier this year. But listeners will still be able to catch him on air.
“I will be presenting a very different show to Post Prynhawn on Radio Cymru between April and June, a Sunday-morning classical music programme featuring my personal choice of music. Post Prynhawn itself has changed a lot since I started in 1978 – then we had typewriters in the office – and not even electric ones! These days everything is there, literally at the tip of your fingers.
“I’ve worked with some great people over the years, and many members of the team have come and gone. It’s been a very happy part of my career.”
Sian Gwynedd, BBC Cymru Wales Head of Welsh Languages Programmes and Services, said: “Gareth Glyn’s contribution to Welsh broadcasting and journalism is an immense and important one – presenting a daily programme such as Post Prynhawn is challenging and he has done so with complete professionalism over so many years. Gareth has been part of Radio Cymru listeners’ lives since the station was launched and we thank him for his dedication and wish him all the best. I’m very happy too that we will still hear Gareth Glyn’s voice on the station in the future.”
An announcement about the show’s new presenter will be made in due course.
