IRELAND: 5 apply for Midlands

The closing date has passed for applications for the new Youth service for the Midlands and Northeast Region of Ireland.

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland received bids from FM107, ICE FM, i107 FM, Red FM and SPIN.

One of the applications, FM107 is linked to the Oxford station of the same name via support from Absolute Radio International. FM107 also has the support of the former Irish international football hero Niall Quinn who is Chairman of the bid.

Niall Quinn commented: “I have always supported opportunities for young people and our research shows that adults aged under 35 who live in the Midlands and North East have a real passion for music — but they desperately want a radio station that they can identify with. FM107 is about connecting with this important ‘i-generation’. It’s about airing their views and issues. We will heavily support young music talent, providing exciting opportunities for artistes from the area to get their music on air and promoted. We know there is a need for a radio station that is focussed on music and local issues for young adults.”
